Planet Solar: 31m loa, 15m beam and 7.5m high
The world’s biggest solar powered boat aims to circumnavigate the globe at 8kts next year.
RENEWABLES: Claimed to be the world’s largest solar powered boat, PlanetSolar was built by Knierim Yachtbau at the HDW shipyard in Kiel. She’s 31m loa, 15m beam and 7.5m high with a radical multihull design that incorporates a massive photovoltaic solar panel array covering 500m².
PlanetSolar will be launched this April, after which she will navigate around the globe at an average speed of 8kts. The planned voyage is expected to get underway in the Mediterranean in the spring of 2011.
The key aim of the project is to demonstrate what can be achieved with today's renewable energy technologies and inspire others on a path towards carbon-reduction.
‘Each step in the PlanetSolar project is a step further in the technological development of renewable energy sources. Thanks to ambitious projects like this scientific research is making progress,’ said owner Immo Ströher.
