Embracing modern facility development has helped Royal Torbay Yacht Club win the 2019 RYA and Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year Award supported by Gallagher.

The club was one of 11 finalists selected by the RYA awards panel and crowned by the public vote.

The trophy was presented by British Sailing Team sailor, James Peters.

The club was also awarded the ‘Fantastic Facilities’ recognition.

“The club has not only taken steps to create new pathways into participation but has broadened and improved the range of activity that it offers,” said RYA chief executive, Sarah Treseder. “As a result, the club has increased its membership and is extremely well placed to grow and thrive for many years to come.”

Pay and play initiative

RTYC has worked to extend its member services, from the RYA OnBoard programme, to hosting several sailing events each year.

More recently it has launched ‘Squadron 13’, a pay and play initiative for eight to 18-year-olds.

Over the past two years, RTYC volunteers have carried out a programme of modernisation to the clubhouse and relaunched the club to the local community.

It has hosted a RYA Push the Boat Out campaign, open days and also improved its communications to increase engagement within their current membership and attract new members.

It has also extended its club licence to a full premises licence and is able to host wedding receptions and parties.
