Challenging the status quo at DAME
The DAME Design Awards 2019 has been won by U SAFE for its remote control, auto-propelled life-saving ring.
The jury found the U SAFE to be a perfect example of how accepted norms for products can be examined and improved by innovative design efforts.
Chair of the jury, Birgit Schnasse, stressed how influential design is. "It is critical that marine companies focus on design, in all its aspects, to ensure that consumer expectations are met when they go boating," she said. "We also need smart design to address important issues like production efficiency, environmental impact improvement and greater integration."
Best of British
Creativity from UK companies dominated the awards this year with British designed and manufactured products receiving a third of the accolades. Innovations from Raymarine UK, Lumishore, Marlow Ropes, Scanstrut and Dometic received special mentions, whilst category winners included Lignia Wood Company, Garmin Europe and Navico.
Lignia Yacht beat its rivals to be named the winner of the ‘marina equipment, boatyard equipment and boat construction tools and materials’ category whilst Garmin Europe’s GPSMAP 86i took the top spot in the ‘marine electronics & marine related software’ category. In the ‘machinery, propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems and fittings’ category, the top prize was shared by Garmin Europe and Navico for their trolling motors.
