SIBS 2019 hailed ‘one of the best ever’
More than 100,000 people visited Southampton International Boat Show powered by Borrow a Boat, a 5% rise on 2018, leading organisers British Marine to dub the show ‘one of the best ever’.
With more than 600 brands on show, the event also featured a record-breaking number of debuts with more than 240 new boats and products on show, as well as over 82 new brands including Pearl Yachts, Nautor’s Swan, Gulf Craft, Kayacat, Kingfisher Yachts Ropes, Proboat and York Marina.
“We have seen fantastic numbers through the door and out on the water. It have been a very buoyant boast show,” said Lesley Robinson, BM's chief executive who added that the show was ‘absolutely spectacular’.
This year’s event was opened by Olympic rowing legend, James Cracknell OBE and TV personality, Lucy Mecklenburgh. Visitors enjoyed the water-based activities on offer such as Try-a-Dive, a purpose-built dive tank, alongside favourites Try-a-Boat and Get Afloat.
Away from the water the line-up of speakers included Tom Cunliffe, Max Liberson and Stokey Woodhall whilst visitors were also able to hear the adventures of British sailors Pip Hare, Conrad Humphreys, Mike Golding, Dee Caffari MBE, Helena Lucas MBE and social media influencers, SV Delos and Sailing Uma.
There was an increased focus on sustainability with the introduction of water refill points and removal of all plastic bottles at catering outlets. This year also marked the launch of the Exhibitor and Contractor Environmental Charter, which saw companies sign up to reduce their environmental impact during the show.
“With such an array of boats, products, services and expertise on offers at this year’s show, it truly has been a celebration of fun, lifestyle and excitement that can be had on the water,” concluded Lesley.
