Torqeedo DC Generator launched
Torqeedo's 25kW 350V DC variable speed diesel generator has been launched to extend the range of a vessel equipped with a Torqeedo Deep Blue hybrid electric propulsion system.
The Range Extender, developed in close collaboration with WhisperPower, has been specifically designed for recreational and commercial applications as a back-up battery charger for the Torqeedo - BMW battery pack which supplies the energy for the propulsion engines and the onboard consumption.
"Torqeedo is very happy with the cooperation with WhisperPower," said Christoph Ballin, Torqeedo co-founder and CEO. "The product synergy is perfect. We are also planning to work together with WhisperPower on mega yacht systems."
The compact and silent generator is based on WhisperPower’s genverter principle that speed is adjusted to the desired or required power to ensure operational efficiency and that fuel consumption, noise, vibration and exhaust emissions are minimised.
The genverter range of variable speed generators with models ranging from 4kW to 150kW are based on compact diesel engines with low emissions.
Integrated into the Deep Blue hybrid system, the Range Extender uses 295g of fuel per kWh of electricity, with a noise level of 54db at a distance of 7m.
Energy is generated for charging the BMW-i lithium batteries through renewable energy sources such as solar panels and hydro generators.
During a long trip or if the hotel load requires more power than the batteries can supply, the DC generator is automatically managed and started up by the advanced hybrid control system providing the reassurance of back-up power.
