Thrusters form a key part of Quick Nautical Equipment’s product range with eight different thruster tunnel sizes available and more than 50 thruster models.

Quick’s strategy is to offer a thruster range for boats from 7m up to 40m, suitable for integration in sailing yachts, powerboats and professional boats, explained the company’s UK representative Andy Sims.

And he pointed out that the company is answering the trends being seen in the marketplace – that of a demand for continuous operation and also a move towards smaller boats having thrusters fitted - with new developments.

“We are seeing that retrofit owner installations are becoming important for the thruster market with owners operating single handed or with an inexperienced crew wanting the assurance of thruster assist,” explained Andy.

“However, there is still a proviso that the systems need to have the same level of integration as OE fit, even on smaller sub 40ft models.”

Customers are also paying greater attention to noise reduction and prop efficiency, proportional control and the ability to interface the thrusters to joystick panels, he explained.

“Expectations of use means that thruster units and controls have to be capable of being upgraded to, for instance, a proportional control mode using the existing drive unit,” Andy added. “We’ve developed products such as our PCS to enable this without having to replace complete systems.

“The PCS is made up of units including controls such as a joystick, graph terminals and the interfaces with the actuators.”

Brushless thrusters

Quick’s brushless thruster range was launched at METSTRADE last year and already, says Andy, are becoming the new standard for boatbuilders.

The thrusters have been subject to extensive testing over the last few years with the aim of creating a noiseless, proportional, maintenance free operation.

The thrusters allow for continuous operation up to 20 minutes in full power.

Quick’s thruster range consists of tunnels from 110mm to 513mm providing a thrust force from 20kgf to 1000kgf in DC, brushless, AC and hydraulic power configurations plus retractable systems.
