Person Behind the Face: Bob Stockley – Icom (UK) MD
How I got into this industry…Accidentally. I was doing casual work around the local markets in Kent when I left school, involving selling clothing (stay-pressed and tonic suits) and collecting fruit and veg from New Covent Garden.
Then I got a job as an apprentice plasterer but work was quiet and my father said I should find a proper job or come work for him at Icom. I worked in the warehouse and despatch, then I moved on in several different areas in the business before finally joining the marine sales team, albeit after several internal applications and some unsuccessful interviews. But 33 years on, I'm MD and I'm still waiting for that proper job to come along.
Best advice I've ever received…Always listen and treat everybody the same as each other and treat people how you would expect to be treated.
You should really read...Animal Farm by George Orwell.
One thing the industry needs less of is...Doom and Gloom, not just the Industry but as a nation.
Most hated buzzword or workplace expression…People who answer a question with the pre-fix ‘thanks for reaching out to me...’
Best place I’ve been... Japan, I'm lucky to travel there for work fairly regularly. Osaka and Tokyo, they are both nuts...
Don't worry about...Anything you can’t change or do anything about, just let it go.
Favourite meal…There is a restaurant called Alegria in Portocolom, Mallorca. Anything on the menu there is a favourite.
How I cope with stress…I'm very lucky, I live overlooking the sea in Herne Bay. I have a view across the bay and estuary out towards the Maunsell Forts. A cold bottle of beer and that view soon make any stress disappear.
Something about you that people might be surprised by…My addiction to rare and interesting Italian motorcycles. I rebuild, restore, fiddle and fettle bikes and can generally be found - when not at the office - in my workshop taking one apart or putting one back together. I currently have 12 bikes and am always on the lookout for a new two wheeled-project to embark on.
