Person Behind the Face - David Tydeman
How I got into this industry… I saw an advert in late 1987 to recruit an MD for Beneteau UK and applied. I’d bought my first race yacht, an SJ30, a few years earlier and was working in the oil industry in Scotland. I thought that joining Beneteau UK was a great change of direction.
Best advice I've ever received...It was from Owen Parker, about sailing in the Solent: “When the wind is in the north, nipper, go north”
You should really read... “A short walk in the Hindu Kush” by Eric Newby to remind us of English eccentricity. There are many British sailors who similarly take on amazing challenges.
One thing the industry needs less of is...More marketing hype. I’ve noticed the changes in the last decade and post crisis, of senior industry management being increasingly irresponsible about giving real facts.
Most hated buzzword or workplace expression… “Ultimate”
Best place I’ve been...Far too many to choose just one. I loved turning the corner at the bottom of Cape Pillar Tasmania as we neared the end of the Hobart Race. Spectacular 1000ft cliffs.
Don't worry about...Sales targets. Get the brand and the team right and clients will come to well-run boat builders.
Favourite meal…Breakfast at a quiet anchorage after a night passage
One thing I couldn’t live without…Sailing friends
How I cope with stress…I go sailing
Something about you that people might be surprised by…There is a Dutch Naval vessel – HMS Tydeman which is named after a relative.
