Person Behind the Face: Jeremy White –Elvstrom Sails
How I got into this industry…Aged 14 I had a Saturday job at Knight and Pink Marine dinghy builders, and this turned into an apprenticeship. Boat building was not for me, so I joined a sail loft called North Sails. I found the transition of turning a flat bit of fabric into a 3-dimensional object much more rewarding. You could build a good sail in a couple of days rather than weeks. That did it for me.
Best advice I've ever received...Was to follow my own instincts. And be cautious about ‘advice’.
On my wedding day someone offered me marital advice, his wife left him the following week. I have been married now for 27 years.
You should really read...I love books and would read 24/7 if I could. I read a lot of late Middle Age history which I find fascinating. One book I always come back to (especially if I feel I have been dealt a bad hand) is Papillon, by Henri Charrièr a tale of alleged misjustice and determination against all odds to survive. It puts your problems into perspective.
One thing the industry needs less of is...Older people holding the industry together. Looking around the boat shows it has been the same people on different stands for years. We need more young people straight from school to learn the trade and refresh the industry.
Most hated buzzword or workplace expression…Cool!
Best place I’ve been...Tregardock Bay in Cornwall, either after a long hike or accessed by boat. Often deserted, totally isolated and tidal, towering free-standing rocks, intimidating church-sized caves, and surf created mist. I always expect to find the Statue of Liberty sticking out of the sand. You could be stranded on a desert island.
Don't worry about...I never really worry about money. I just concentrate on a good product and good service, these are my drivers. Money is a necessity, which will come if you look after the first two.
Favourite meal…Homemade lasagne with garlic bread and a glass of red wine – heaven.
How I cope with stress…A beer with friends in my local, The Coal Exchange, in Emsworth. Talking is by far the best way of de-stressing. It’s taken me 45 years to work that one out, and its far preferable to going to the gym.
Something about you that people might be surprised by…I want to write books – for children and also one for adults. They have been in my head for probably over ten years. I would also like to design ladies clothing from interesting fabrics.
