The NMMA has a wealth of market data regarding the US boating market that is free to NMMA members but can be purchased by non-NMMA members.
Their New Powerboat Registrations Report has been updated through August 2017 and advance data shows new powerboat registrations were up 5.3% year-over-year (YOY) for the rolling 12-month (R12M) period through August.
Highlights from the report show nearly all segments were up through August (R12M YOY). Growth in registrations was led by the following segments: tow boats (up 8.3%), cruisers (up 7.9%), pontoons (up 7.5 %) and personal watercraft (up 7.3%). Outboards boats, which represent 65% of total new powerboat sales, were up 5.2% in registrations. Larger boats 27ft and greater, were up 8.8% through August (R12M YOY).
The NMMA also recently released the complete 2016 US Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract, which contains thousands of data points and insights on the US boating industry. A look at the numbers shows annual US sales of boats, marine products and services: $36B (2016).
These compare to $28.7B (2011) and $35B (2006). New traditional powerboats sold: 188,800 (2016) compared to 133,800 (2011) and 289,900 (2006). Pre-owned boats sold were 981,600 in 2016 compared to 909,900 (2011) and 1,004,200 (2006). The number of registered boats continues to decline in the US with 11.9 million in 2016, 12.3 million in 2011) and 12.8 million in 2006.
Leading the nation in sales of new powerboats, engines, trailers, and accessories in 2016 were Florida: $2.5B, up 5% from 2015 and Texas: $1.4B, up 5% from 2015. Both of these states were walloped by the recent spate of hurricanes with the likely consequential statistical impact for this year’s numbers.
