Reliable off-grid power is a challenge on-board yachts and sailboats.

As SFC Energy states: “Generators are loud, solar modules take up precious space and wind and water generators depend upon weather and tides.”

SFC’s EFOY Comfort fuel cells are intended as a silent, lightweight alternative. In operation the company says they are nearly inaudible, only producing water vapor and small amounts of CO2, without any harmful emissions or particulates.

The fuel cell is connected to the on-board battery and continuously monitors its charge state. Once the battery’s charge level drops below a pre-defined threshold, the fuel cell automatically starts to recharge it. A fuel cartridge exchange is needed occasionally.

Direct methanol fuel cells use methanol, an alcohol which has a high energy density. EFOY’s M10 fuel cartridge has a capacity of 11.1kWh, weighs 8kg and has a pack size of 44 x 20 x 33cm.

EFOY Comfort fuel cells are available in three power sizes with a daily charging capacity from 80 to 210Ah.
