In June last year performance equipment producer and supplier, Sea Sure, became the first UK distributor for Skydex, a firm specialising in shock mitigation products.

Sea Sure is primarily known for its dinghy and yacht fittings, but over the last 18 months it has focused on developing a range of equipment for the marine market that will reduce the effect of shock vibration on the body.

Whole body vibration

This was in response to Maritime Coastguard Agency guidelines advising that operators need to take action to reduce whole body vibration on all commercial boats and vessels.

With Skydex being a major player in this area – it initially developed impact reduction technology for leading running shoe brands and is contracted to line some 22,000 military vehicles worldwide with equipment to lessen the impact of IEDs – Sea Sure recognised that together their expertise would make a formidable partnership.

Sea Sure technical sales manager, Dan Henderson, explains: “The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, require employers and organisations using volunteers to reduce their crews’ exposure to vibration; it therefore made sense for us to come together and help people tackle this issue.”

Protecting crew

Skydex is available in boat decking and seat cushioning formats and in the last couple of months the RNLI has begun to apply it to the decks and wheelhouses of all its vessels.

Dan concludes: “We’ve received some great feedback for this - I’m delighted businesses, organisations and boat builders are taking an interest in a solution that protects crew from potential injuries during high-speed operations.

“And with it being retro-fit, Skydex can be added to old and new boats.”
