SYH chooses West System products
When it comes to fitting-out, Suffolk Yacht Harbour uses products from Wessex Resins and Adhesives for jobs such as bonding teak decks to fibre glass gel coats and bonding plywood sub-decks on timber boats.
The boatyard is able to carry out repairs or refurbishment work to glass fibre, wooden or steel boats up to 70ft overall length.
“We work on a wide variety of boats,” says Robert Clarke, SYH workshop supervisor. “From brand new modern yachts to those over 100 years old.”
He added: “We use West System epoxy on a wide spectrum of exterior fitout, from small repairs to timber and glass fibre through to new decks.”
And he explained that many surveyors request the use of West System products for major repairs, specifying the use of epoxy resins rather than polyester.
“That’s because West System epoxy has a much better secondary bond than polyester to GRP,” said Robert.
The boatyard also uses Wessex products for faring and for treating boats that have suffered from osmosis.
“We peel off a layer of gel coat and use West System epoxy and associated fillers to reprofile the bottom of the boat and then use the coating system to reseal,” explained Robert.
According to David Johnson, Wessex Resins and Adhesives sales director, the company is seeing an upward trend in the use of West System G/Flex epoxy.
“It’s now the ‘go to’ product for high strength bonding of dissimilar timber and some plastics,” he said.
