90 years of yacht design
Lymington based yacht designer Laurent Giles is marking 90 years in business.
Laurent Giles designed the all-aluminum offshore racing yacht, Gulvain and was one of the first to adopt GRP construction in the early 1960’s.
The company was founded by Jack Laurent Giles in 1927 and while many of the earlier designs were ‘gentleman’s’ sailing yachts, the pursuit of performance was always paramount and honed in racing yacht design, as demonstrated by the America’s Cup Yacht Flica II.
“The passion and innovation instilled by Jack is embedded in the company’s DNA that bears his name and we continue to innovate, push the boundaries and strive for perfection as Jack did,” explained MD David Lewis.
The last 90 years have seen Laurent Giles work with many leading shipyards and builders including Abeking & Rasmussen, Benetti, Berthon and Pendennis.
Today, the company says it is pursuing the latest developments in new construction materials and methods, including refined hull design and optimisation, hydrofoil advances, eco-motor and sailing yachts.
