Barton Marine to open EU operation?
A new European facility is on the cards for Barton Marine.
The company, headed by Suzanne Blaustone, is making plans to continue supplying customers in Europe with minimal disruption in the event of a No Deal Brexit, a move that will take jobs and wealth away from the UK.
“We are working towards incorporating in another country and opening a European warehouse and forwarding facility,” explained Suzanne. “It’s an expensive and logistically challenging addition; the legalities are very expensive but it’s something we will have to do.”
She added: “Given a No Deal, we will have to open, fund and staff a facility abroad to respond to European orders.
“Our customers in the EU expect the same service, competitive pricing and delivery as we provide now.”
“Without a customs union and with the UK having negotiated only one EU trade deal with Switzerland, we will lose our competitive edge against European competition unless we put these measures in place.”
And she explained that 65% of Barton Marine’s marine business goes to Europe, and these markets, she says, are considered our home markets, not foreign.
“With a customs union, we can ship as easily to Düsseldorf as we can to Derbyshire,” said Suzanne.
“So far, preliminary plans are under discussion with a global trading company in Antwerp, that will help establish an office and warehousing program for Barton in Belgium.”
“We will need a European identity and will have to take jobs and wealth out of Britain to remain competitive. So we have to invest in Europe in order to continue shipping our products there without trade constraints.”
In addition, raw materials sourced in Europe are being affected by exchange rate increases and may be held up at borders.
All options are being considered for raw material changes should new regulations affect supply.
