Nine outstanding marine companies have been recognised for excellence within the industry, picking up a British Marine Award 2019 at the Southampton International Boat Show powered by Borrow a Boat.

Now in its sixth year, the ceremony took place during the Exhibitor Party with winners including Ancasta International Boat Sales (Best Marine Company – over 20 employees), Marine Resources Recruitment (Best Marine Company – under 20 employees), Pendennis Shipyard (Best Training and Development Award) and Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation (Marine Charity of the Year).

“Our congratulations go to all the winners and runners up of this year’s British Marine," said Lesley Robinson, BM's chief executive. "We all want to be the best at what we do and these recognised companies and charities can justifiably say that they are.”

New awards

This year saw the launch of two new awards - Entrepreneur of the Year in honour of Robert Braithwaite, won by William Jet Tenders and the Exhibitor Environmental Award, won jointly by Spirit Yachts and RS Sailing, with Rockley Watersports and Sunsail and The Moorings second and third runners-up respectively.

Spirit Yachts ran a 'paperless boat show' avoiding the use of printed materials and instead opting for digital copies. It also operates a recycling policy, uses refillable water bottles and eschews single-use plastics. "We hope the introduction of this new award will encourage other marine companies to examine their sustainability initiatives," said MD Nigel Stuart.

Maritime UK Awards

Also scooping an award was Shakespeare Marine who won the Innovation Award at the inaugural Maritime UK Awards which are held alongside the boat show and celebrate the thriving marine industry.

Dave Manesseh, European sales manager for Shakespeare Marine, accepted the award for the company's GALAXY-INFL8 emergency VHF antenna. "We are incredibly proud to be awarded the first ever Maritime UK Innovation Award. This is testament to the pioneering nature of our team and everyone involved with Shakespeare Marine," he said.
