Hybrid solution combines VSAT and 4G
The 150ft Ganesha has become the first superyacht to fit a dual antenna to utilise Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress Ka-band VSAT service.
Installed through Inmarsat reseller e3 Systems, the dual Cobham SAILOR 60 GX antennas measure 60cm and are a lightweight and compact way of accessing High Throughput Service Fleet Xpress maritime broadband.
Ganesha is using e3’s hybrid solution combining VSAT and 4G data to deliver connectivity, including internet protocol television. It also enables the vessel to manage and monitor cyber security.
“Ganesha is one the world’s most beautiful performance sailing yachts,” said Roger Horner, group MD e3 Systems.
“With Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress solution, we have been able to provide global connectivity and improve her looks by replacing the overpowering original domes and her performance by reducing the weight in the rig.”
The Fleet Xpress dual antenna solution was chosen for its ability to provide guaranteed global bandwidth.
Ganesha’s itineraries take her round the world and the combination of Inmarsat’s high-speed Ka-band technology and L-band FleetBroadband backup, reinforced with automatic switching between the two antennas, overcomes the threat of line-of-sight signal outages caused by rig and sails.
“When combined with our hybrid solution the yacht also has 4G, ensuring three alternative means of communication - a win, win, win situation,” added Roger.
